When people ask me what kind of biker I am, I always smile. Truth is, I don’t stick to just one style. Depending on the mood, the bike, and the company, I live three completely different types of motorbike trips.
Let’s explore them:
1. The Relax Ride – With My Wife or some close Friends ❤️🍷
This is the “easy mode.” A slow trot between charming hotels, good restaurants, and cultural stops. Days filled with museums, city walks, wine tastings, and long hours in the spa. Riding? Not more than 100 km a day, because the real focus is living well.
I usually do two or three of these every year, always with my wife, my favorite travel partner, she makes me laugh harder than anyone else. They never last more than 7–10 days, just enough to relax without getting stuck in one place.
2. The Adventure Journey – Solo or Light Company ⛺🔥
This is where my KTM 1290 comes alive. Long stretches of road mixed with off-road trails, nights under the stars, and mornings with coffee at sunrise in front of the tent. Priceless moments. I travel light and I bring just the minimal gear to survive.
These trips last 30 to 60 days. I camp, I ride, I explore, I pause for a day of rest every 4–5. I meet people on the road, share wine by the fire, and discover not just new places but also new parts of myself. It’s a mix of challenge, solitude, and connection.
3. The Extreme Adventure – Pure Off-Road Madness 🏜️💥
For this I bring out the KTM 500 or 690, stripped to the bone. No heavy luggage, no camping gear, just a minimal change of clothes and flip-flops instead of shoes.
It’s 100% off-road: rocky mule tracks, sandy trails, whatever wild path I can find. These trips don’t go beyond two weeks, they’re brutal, raw, and demand top physical condition and skill. Nights are spent in local guesthouses or wherever hospitality is found. No camping as tents and stuff are heavy and you must stay lean.
You don’t do this alone unless you’re crazy like me you go with one or two friends who share the same spirit of adaptation, grit, and love for pushing limits.
These are the three worlds of motorbike travel that I live in. Each one unique, each one addictive.
